What’s Most Important in Your Life?

Having just put the phone down to my doctor, absorbing the latest health issue that I now need to deal with, which I will, a question popped into my head, “What’s Most Important in Your Life?”

We often talk about our priorities in life. But how many of us have ever stopped to really think about which things are most important to us, let alone found the time to spend on them?  Surely it is these things we refer to as priorities which we need to follow through on.

Take a moment and imagine that you’re at the end of your life and have a chance to give your current self some advice. What would you say? Many people find themselves saying things like “spend more time on the things that really matter”. I doubt anyone will ever say spend more time at work, nor will they say in the Pub or watching TV.

But how often do we actually stop to think about the things in our lives that really matter most? And even if we are clear on our priorities, are we actually living in a way that is consistent with them right now?

I believe the two most important things to me are:

The first is helping people be happy, and to relieve them of the suffering they experience. My No. 1 aspiration in life is to leave each person I interact with at least a little bit better off than I found them, whether this be through social media, my blog writing, speaking engagement, coaching or from the books I will publish. In doing so I will leave a legacy to be proud of having made a valuable contribution.

Second is my family.  Cultivating true love is probably the most powerful thing we can do to increase our own happiness. If we only get a limited time shouldn’t we be spending as much of it we can with those we love.

Do you know what’s most important in your life?

Take a look at where you spend your time.  This is one of the best measuring sticks.

When you have free time, do you spend it on the computer, watching TV or playing golf with the guys?  Or do you spend it playing outside with your kids or having coffee with your wife?  Reading a book or perhaps trying to write one? Learning something new to develop yourself? Offering your time to a worthy cause? Making yourself available to help someone in need?

Then stop and be aware of your inner thoughts. Where does your mind take you most often? What does it think about?

Now, lets say you had only had 6 months left to live, what is it you’d want to do with that time? Determining what’s most important in your life ensures you spend time in the right place.

Finally like me, think about your legacy. When you are gone, what legacy will you leave?  Don’t let life pass you by.  Don’t wait for tomorrow to make a difference because we are not promised one day beyond today.  Spend time on the people, places and things that matter most.  Leave a legacy of changed lives.

What’s most important in your life is what excites you the most, makes you feel safe, comfortable and alive. It can almost be anything really — and it needn’t be just one thing, but you need to find what yours is.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Mark Twain
